About St BARTHelemy
My French Caribbean base for 2 years now, this is known as "The Billionaire's Island" This small island wasn't always "jet-setter" style, though. Today you can enjoy that high life and yet still find fishermen, hills with wild goats, the hen, rooster and chicks in front of a shop, peacocks in the backyard and and a unique Creole culture.
Getting to St BARTH
While there are some direct flights, the airport isn't international and can only receive small passenger planes. Check if there are direct flights from your city to SBH (the code for the only airport on St Barth, "Haen").
Most people, however, end up flying into St Martin international airport (SXM) and take a ferry or a flight to St Barth.
There are two ferry lines to St Barth, each with their own schedules and pricing. Buy your ferry tickets to/from St Martin/St Barth on their official pages:
About St Martin
This underrated island has a fascinating duality. Easy to cross between the French and Dutch side, it's like the island has two personalities. One side has sleeker hotels and large restaurants. On the other you have a more Caribbean, local feel, and gems that the locals know about but you can just as easily find and enjoy. My first time on the island was on a cruise ship and it just didn't give the island a fair shake. So don't judge based on a pit stop at their port! There's more to this island, especially for those who prefer to avoid the hoards of tourists.
What about the dancing?
The Salsa and Kizomba instructors have done a great job of teaching at a good level within their small communities. In St Martin you won't get the sheer numbers of dancers at a social that you would in the U.S. or Europe, but, I repeat, the level is good. They host festivals that attract international instructors and social dancers.
Getting to St Martin
There are TWO airports on the island. The Princess Juliana Airport (SXM) hosts large airlines like Spirit and American Airlines and JetBlue. Cheap plane tickets can go from as little as $120 from Florida. From Paris there are affordable, direct flights to St Martin. The other airport, L'Éspérance (SFG) is more local. Suggestion: if you're shopping for flights, check the box for "nearby airports" if your search engine has one.
St Martin is a perfect, inexpensive getaway to a unique location that isn't overrun with tourists. And bonus, you get to have some good dances in Salsa and Kizomba! The community here is close-knit and will love to dance with you!
Stay for the weekend or a week. I'll help you figure it out.
